Our philosophy at Gonzolax is focus on, and stress the fundamentals, at every age level, which will allow a player to learn and understand the game, with greater confidence.



Tim Stecher, Founding Member   HS-Varsity team

Tim was born and raised in Catonsville, where he played for the Catonsville Lacrosse club. He played high school Lacrosse at Calvert Hall. Tim played his college lacrosse at UMBC, where he was the 1989 Choice Visa Scholar Athlete, 1992 UMBC Unsung Hero Award recipient, and also held UMBC record for best shooting percentage in a season from 1992 until it was broken in 2002. His 21 years of coaching experience include positions as the Boys Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach of North Carroll High, assistant coach at Howard and Catonsville high schools. In 2013, Tim was named the NFHS Coach of the Year for the State of Maryland. Additionally, Tim serves as the Director of the North Carroll Lacrosse program. He can frequently be found playing in the men's league for the Glyndon Lacrosse Club.


Jamie Carver, Founding Member  U13 AA team

Jamie is a founding member of the Gonzo Program. He received All-American honors while playing midfield at Washington College, playing in two NCAA tournaments. He currently coaches at North Carroll Rec Lacrosse, and as a part time, volunteer assistant with New Oxford HS. Past higher level coaching experiences include Pikesville High School and Liberty High School.  Jamie plays men's lacrosse for Glyndon Lacrosse Club. He played attack for South Carroll High School, earning Carroll County Lacrosse Player of the Year in 1990.

Andy Sands – HS-Varsity team

This is Coach Sands’ fifth year with Gonzo. Coach Sands played lacrosse in Pennsylvania for Strath Haven High school where he received All Central League Honors.  He went onto play college lacrosse at Mercyhurst University receiving All American honors at the midfield position in his junior and senior seasons and Academic All American honors in his senior season. While at Mercyhurst, he was team captain his junior and senior years and played in two NCAA Final Fours.  Coach Sands graduated with dual degrees in Elementary and Special Education.  He currently is a special education teacher for Baltimore County Public Schools.  His previous coaching experiences include being the varsity assistant coach at Parkville High school for the past three seasons.  Coach Sands continues to play men’s lacrosse for a variety of teams throughout the fall, winter, and summer seasons.

Jim McCann -- Goalie coach and HS-Varsity team

This is Coach McCann's third year as the goalie coach for Gonzo. Coach Jimmy is currently an assistant coach at Westminster High School Varsity. Coach McCann started playing lacrosse on Long Island at Centereach High School and went on to play college lacrosse at Mercyhurst University. While at Mercyhurst, he was a part of two NCAA Final Four teams.  Coach McCann majored in Elementary and Special Education and graduated with a Masters Degree in Special Education.  He is currently a Special Education teacher in Baltimore County Public Schools.  His previous coaching experiences include being the Head JV/Varsity assistant coach at Parkville High School for three seasons before serving as the goalie coach at Pikesville High School for a season. Coach McCann continues to play goalie for a various men's league teams in the Baltimore area. 

Dave Benzing - U11 AA 2023 team

Dave grew up in Northeast Baltimore; he attended and played lacrosse at Archbishop Curley High School and Salisbury State University.  He started his coaching career in Severna Park in 1997, and has continued throughout the years coaching both girls/boys lacrosse and soccer.  Dave is a Physical Therapist, and currently holds coaching certifications in both sports.  Recently, for the past 4 years, Dave has been coaching lacrosse for the SouthWestern Youth Lacrosse club in Hanover, PA.  He serves as a board member for that club, and also runs their Pocket's program.  This will be his third year with Gonzo, coaching the 2023 team.

Matt Lucas - U11 AA 2023 Team

Matt is currently in his Senior season as a Defensman for the NCAA Division I Mercer University Bears.  He played lacrosse in the MIAA A conference while attending  Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, MD… four-year Varsity letterman in lacrosse under head coach David Slafkosky where Lucas was Captain… three-year varsity letterman in wrestling


Sean Nevin – U15 AA

In his first season with Gonzo, Sean has just completed his sophomore season playing Defense at Division III Bridgewater College in Virginia. He received ODAC All Academic Honors his freshman year. Sean was born and raised in Hampstead, where he played for North Carroll Rec Council. He played three years of high school varsity lacrosse at North Carroll where he received Second Team, All Conference Honors, and was selected for the senior All-star team in 2013. He played for the Baltimore Hawks club team.

Nick Sherman  - U15 AA

Coach Nick joins Gonzo after his Sophmore season playing Defense at NCAA DIII Bridgewater College. He played high school lacrosse at North Carroll High School under the coaching of Tim Stecher. Nick was an all county honorable mention selection in 2013 and was selected to the Carroll County senior all star team in 2013. Born and raised in Hampstead, Nick played for the Baltimore Hawks lacrosse club

Kyle Fiedler – U15 AA

Coach Kyle is currently playing Attack at McDaniel College. Coach was a four year starting attackman at North Carroll High School. He was an All-Conference and All-County player. Coach Kyle is currently the all-time points leader in school history and second in all-time career points in Carroll County. Kyle played club lacrosse for the Baltimore Breakers 2014 team for six years.

Mike Strohman - U11A

This will be Coach Strohman's first year with the Gonzo Lacrosse Club. Mike, a father of 3 boys playing lacrosse, resides in Hampstead and has been involved with the North Carroll lacrosse program for the last 4 years coaching at the Tyker and Pockets level. He grew up in the Annapolis area playing for Broadneck High School leading the Bruins to the MD State Championship earning All-County/All-Met (HM) honors and selected to the USILA North/South All Star game. Coach Strohman continued his career at Towson University playing midfield for four years while participating in two NCAA tournaments for the Tigers. Post college, he has remained active in lacrosse at the club level for various teams and is currently playing in the Maryland Masters Lacrosse League.
